What is Human Trafficking?

Human Trafficking is modern day slavery. It is a crime under federal and international law; it is also a crime in every state in the United States. But what is it? Human Trafficking is divided into two forms called Sex Trafficking and Labor Trafficking.


Sex trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a person for the purposes of a commercial sex act, in which the commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion.


Labor trafficking is the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purposes of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery,

According to 2016 Indiana State Report on Human Trafficking, “Human trafficking is a rapidly growing crime in Indiana as well as the U.S.” Source

In 2017, there were 93 cases of Human Trafficking cases reported, which is almost double the amount of reported cases 5 years ago. Source
