The legacy of David G. Nolen

David Nolen served as the Hope Center Indy co-founder and associate director from March 2016 to May 31, 2019.

In 2016, David was 26 years old, but with wisdom beyond his age, he stood in faith with Hubert that God would provide a campus for the ministry. It was David’s faith and boldness that compelled them to make an offer on our current campus. David wanted everyone to experience God’s love, and he became passionate about helping women coming out of human trafficking.

As he witnessed God do miracles and provide for each need at Hope Center Indy, he often said, “God loves to show off!” Many were blessed to hear David share the vision of the Hope Center on a tour. His wit and fun personality combined with his great passion for how God was working at the Hope Center made him a favorite tour guide and speaker for many.

David began having heart palpitations in September 2018. After going to the doctor, he discovered that he had a birth defect in his aortic valve and would likely need surgery. David prayed with family and friends that God would heal him, and he persevered in his leadership at the Hope Center and his plans to marry the love of his life, Stephanie Nolen (Kluger). On November 4, 2018, David and Stephanie were married in Hope Center's Freedom Barn. It was a beautiful day of celebration for everyone.

In January, the doctors told David he would need to have open heart surgery soon, and he had the surgery on May 17, 2019. Tragically, David passed away in his sleep on May 31, 2019 due to unexpected surgical complications. May 31, 2019 was a devastating day for Stephanie, the Nolen family, the Hope Center family, and all of David’s friends, but May 31, 2019 was also the day David was promoted to heaven and got see Jesus face to face.

Many of us are still hurting as we deeply miss David’s friendship, leadership, and presence at Hope Center Indy. David inspired us to live out God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). In his memory, the Redefined Boutique has created a t-shirt that says, “On earth as it is in heaven.”

We celebrate that the new food pantry that has opened at Hope Center Indy is named in David's honor: "The David Nolen Pantry of Hope." Please join us in praying that God will comfort us in our pain and continue to guide the staff at HCI to follow Jesus as He leads us.
