Hope Center Indy is committed to honoring the dignity, agency, and privacy of every individual whose story is shared. Throughout the development of this article, the graduate maintained full control over the narrative and participated in reviewing the content and selecting the accompanying photographs. To protect her privacy, she has chosen to be identified as "Sunshine." All information included in this story is shared with her explicit informed consent.

There are moments when God's faithfulness is impossible to miss. May 1, 2026, was one of those moments as Hope Center staff, volunteers, family members, church partners, friends, and residents gathered to celebrate the latest graduate of the Take Heart Residential Program: Sunshine

The ballroom filled with familiar faces. Hugs and smiles were exchanged as guests found their seats. Nearby, a canvas with a fingerprint tree stood ready to receive the marks of those gathered in celebration. A gift table overflowed with presents, each one intended to encourage and equip the graduate as she stepped into a new season of life.
The celebration began with opening remarks from Jenn Starr, Director of Residential Ministries, followed by words from Morgan Jones, Direct Care Coordinator, and Sunshine’s case manager, Jen Norton. These women, who spent countless days walking alongside Sunshine shared memories, encouragement, and reflections on the growth they witnessed throughout her time in the program.
“I want you to know that you are seen,” said Jenn Starr. “I see you. Everyone here sees you and loves you. We are your cheerleaders, saying, ‘Yes! Go, Sunshine, go!’ But most importantly, your Father sees you. He loves you. He holds all your tears. He has been with you through every struggle, and that will never change.”
Jenn also recalled that when Sunshine first entered the program, she told her she was determined to finish well.
“I believed you,” Jenn said. “To do great things, it takes that kind of deep-down determination. I want you to continue approaching life that way. I know you can do it!”
As Hope Center Indy Associate Director Mary Wilkinson reflected on Sunshine’s journey, her memories stretched back to some of the earliest days of the program. Before they had even spent much time together, Mary recalled hearing staff members talk about Sunshine with excitement and optimism. When she finally got to know Sunshine personally, it wasn't long before one particular quality stood out.
“The first thing that left an impression on me when I met you was your sense of humor,” said Mary.
From playful accents at a Derby party to jokes shared during a talent show and an unforgettable Lord of the Rings-inspired Christmas play, Sunshine consistently brought joy and laughter to those around her.
"The Bible tells us that laughter is good medicine," Mary said. "So I want to thank you for bringing laughter to us."
Mary also came to understand that Sunshine’s joy was not born from an easy life. Through conversations in Hope Center's relationships class, she learned about the significant losses and grief Sunshine had carried.
"You have known deep grief," Mary shared. "While you have been someone who makes others laugh, you have had to choose to lean into laughter even in the midst of pain. I admire that you have chosen to find joy in healing from life's hardships."

Another theme that surfaced again and again throughout Sunshine's journey was her love for Hope Center’s K9 program, where she found purpose and confidence while helping care for the K9s being trained to assist in the fight against exploitation and trafficking. Anyone who spent time around her quickly learned how much she cherished the dogs and the opportunity to care for them. Staff members watched her confidence grow as she served faithfully and poured care into the animals entrusted to her. Sunshine also embraced the responsibility of helping socialize and train Hope Center’s puppies during their earliest stages. The time she invested in the puppies helped prepare them for the important work ahead, supporting efforts to protect children, identify survivors, and continue in the fight against trafficking.
"We are proud of you," said Mary. "Proud of how you thoughtfully reflected on your life's experiences and showed determination to learn God's ways. How you cultivated friendships and supported your sisters in the program through their ups and downs. How you courageously showed up week after week to seek healing in Christ."
“That you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9
During the ceremony, each graduate has the opportunity to choose a special speaker, and Sunshine selected Carrie Jones, a graduate of the Take Heart program from 2025. After experiencing God's transforming work in her own life, Carrie felt called to share the hope she had found in Christ with others. Today, she dedicates her life to walking alongside other women facing many of the same struggles she once faced herself.

Carrie's connection to Sunshine began before Sunshine arrived at the Hope Center. During an outreach visit to a program serving individuals experiencing homelessness, Carrie and Dr. Carolyn Knight encountered Sunshine for the first time. At the time, none of them could have known that God was already at work, preparing a future that would one day bring them together again to celebrate His faithfulness.
“The Holy Spirit prompted me to go to the laundry room. And there you were. I introduced myself to you and slid you a Reece’s cup,” said Carrie, gently addressing Sunshine. “I then asked you how you were doing and you said, ‘my heart is hurting.’”
Carrie recalled a season when she didn't know where her next meal would come from or whether she would have a roof over her head. In the midst of that uncertainty, she cried out, "Jesus, have mercy on me! Please deliver me from these circumstances, and if You do, I will share the Gospel from the mountaintop. Because it's only You that can get me out of this!" Carrie said her greatest hope was that her story would one day point someone else to Christ.
Carrie remembered watching Sunshine struggle through discouragement and setbacks. Yet she and Dr. Carolyn Knight continued returning, determined not to give up on her. "I would walk in and say, 'Where's my Sunshine?!" said Carrie.
One day, Carrie and Dr. Knight stopped to pray with Sunshine. They asked her, "Do you believe you were made for more? Do you have faith the size of a mustard seed?" Carrie said, "If so, get up, Sunshine. Let's go to the Hope Center and do this!"
Carrie spoke passionately about the determination she witnessed in Sunshine throughout her journey. "It takes a spiritual grit. It takes tenacity. It takes a deep love, a deep trust that maybe we're not even capable of when we walk in the door." Then, Carrie smiled and said, "I saw a vision of you finishing the program. And right now, look at you!"

As Carrie was finishing her speech, Sunshine’s youngest son quietly entered the ballroom. Sunshine was not expecting him. Her oldest son had already been seated with family members at her table. For a moment, surprise flashed across her face, followed by an overwhelming wave of joyful tears. Then the room burst into cheers, applause, and celebration as everyone realized what was happening. The joy in the room was undeniable!
During an opportunity for those in attendance to write words of encouragement for Sunshine, her sons asked to share a few words.
"You came here 659 days ago, to a T. I remember that day so well,” said her oldest son. He spoke about watching her persevere through challenges and having faith that she would make it through the program, even if at the beginning, she didn’t. "For you to come from where you were before, I’m extremely proud of you. And everyday, I look up to you. I've watched you be at the ground. I've seen you at your lowest and I've seen you almost at your highest, but right now you are at your highest. I need you to go and exceed that limit more than you ever could. I'm a completely different man than I was five years ago, and that's because of you." Sunshine's youngest son added, "I'm extremely proud of you and I love you so much."
When it was Sunshine's turn to speak, she reflected on how far she had come since first arriving at Hope Center Indy.
"Walking in the door of the Hope Center was scary and unknown," she shared in her speech. Carrying years of pain and fear, she wasn't sure how the program could help with the burdens she had carried for so long. "They became part of me. It weighed me down. I felt shame, unworthy, and terrified of what people thought of me."
For much of her life, the voices around her had shaped the way she saw herself. "I had been put down so much, I didn't know how to look at myself," she said.
As Sunshine grew in her relationship with God and connected with the staff and residents around her, she encountered unconditional love. "Getting to know God and everyone here, I was shown love, and nobody judged me. They just wanted to help me," she said.
"This program has turned my life to where I know how to feel, love, respect people, and respect myself. Everything I have gotten to do while I was here has been a blessing."
She thanked all the people who have walked beside her throughout her journey. "You all will be forever in my heart. You all will be in my life."

Sunshine received her certificate of completion and a special gift given to all graduates to commemorate the occasion.
As one chapter closes and another begins, we celebrate all that God has done and look forward with joyful expectation to all He will continue to do.
After Sunshine received her certificate of completion, there was one more exciting moment that captured the audience's attention. Hope Community representative Lori Pollard joined Sunshine at the front of the room to officially welcome her into the Hope Community Transitional Housing Program.
Lori shared her excitement for this new season of Sunshine's life and reminded her of the continued support and encouragement she will receive through Hope Community.
Hope Community serves as a crucial bridge for women transitioning from restorative care programs, providing the support, stability, and resources needed as they reintegrate into the community and continue their journey toward independence.
Recalling a recent prayer Sunshine had prayed in the Prayer Center, Mary shared, "I sat in front of you on Wednesday when you prayed, 'God, I am more excited than anyone to see what You have for me in this next chapter of my life.'
"I affirm your joyful anticipation of what God is going to do in the months and years to come," Mary said. "Commit your way to the Lord and see the new mercies God has for you each morning. We love you, and we're cheering you on!"
"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” Isaiah 43:1-3.
